What are symbols of love? How do we know that they are symbols of love? This photo to me is a symbol of love. To someone else it could represent something completely different. So wheres the grey area how do we make that jump from a photo to a representation of love? Charles Peirces explanation of semiotics explains this leap in the human brain. First it starts out with the symbol the sign which in this case is this particular photo. The sign also known as the signifier icon or symbol. Next is the actual object which is the members of my family. Then the final step is the interpretant, the definition or concept that we make the sign to be. When I see the sign (the photo) I interpret to family, mother, father, sister, caring, giving, sharing, emotional uplifting, which all summed up to one word for me is love. This is my interpretant of this photo and what it means to me and me only. Without this process we wouldn’t be able to assign meaning to things that don’t talk to us. We construct our reality based on the way we interpret the things around us. A process designed by us in necessity to understand.
